The point of the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!) is to create a vibrant cultural hub dedicated to showcasing and uplifting the voices of underrepresented artists, particularly those from the LGBTQ+ community, women, and people of color. Founded in 1998 by Arthur Avilés and Charles Rice-González, BAAD! has become a vital space for avant-garde performances, dance, theater, spoken word, and visual arts in the Bronx.
BAAD! fosters a strong, inclusive community that celebrates diversity and challenges societal norms through art. It serves as a safe space for queer, trans, and BIPOC artists to explore identity, resistance, and empowerment. The academy is known for its bold programming, including the BAAD!ASS Women’s Festival and OUT LIKE THAT! Queer Performance Festival, which highlight voices often marginalized in mainstream art spaces.
With its deep commitment to social justice and artistic innovation, BAAD! is more than just a performance venue—it’s a movement that nurtures radical creativity and community-driven storytelling.
